What does that even mean?!
It means that when we write and read anything by and for Black Us, it is Unapologetically Black, with our people at the center, in the ways we determine to depict ourselves, our lives, our environment and our destiny!
Iyapo Yapa is a cartoonist, illustrator, and graphic artist who has worked in the graphic art field most of his adult life. He has finally made the leap to his TRUE passion, WRITING.
When not writing, Iyapo can be found designing something or other, drawing cartoon characters or composing music.

The power to create … for me…is the talent the Creator gave to man that is closest to Yah’s own. The Bible says that, “In the Beginning was the WORD”—and that Yah SPOKE everything into existence.
That is one of the most amazing things to me. The fact that if, just in our stories—we are able to create entire WORLDS and populate them using WORDS. The only limits of that creation, being our own imaginations!

MELANIN
A NOVEL
I unapologetically write for Black audiences. Anyone can read my work of course, it’s not like I can control that; but when I’m writing, my audience is Black people first, last and foremost. I write stories for and about Black Us. Stories with no need for ‘white saviors’ or for ‘white approval’ or accolades. Stories that I don’t spend the first 10 to 20 pages apologizing for what is about to be read, as to preemptively soothe the feelings of someone who is about to read the work and may be upset or offended by the rawness of it. Some of my works deal with our oppression, some are void of it, as if it had never existed. In some we lose, as happens in life—but in most, we overwhelmingly WIN. THESE are the stories I want to read. THESE are the stories I choose to tell, because I LOVE being Black.

IYAPO YAPA has released his debut novel: MELANIN: A Novel, and he HIT THE GROUND RUNNING!
MELANIN takes us into a world where due to a man made radiological catastrophe, the ONLY way to survive on earth is to become phenotypically, genetically BLACK!
And the story takes off from there! There are twists, turns, and an ending that will leave you satisfied, but still begging for MORE!
Our voices
Contolling OUR Narrative!
Every race of people, every culture it seems, goes to great lengths to control their own narrative, and how they are perceived around the world. Every race but ONE. For too long we have been willing to let OTHERS tell our stories. To let OTHERS depict us as they will, and as is asked both euphemistically and rhetorically,
“How’s that working’ out for ya.”
I have added my voice to the ever growing chorus of our people who have finally said
“Thanks, but no thanks … WE’LL take it from here!”
